However, the power of this myth lies not in its truth, but in its utility. In 1904, Louise Frances Dodge, a society editor for the Tampa Tribune , and George W. Hardee, a businessman, sought a theme for a May Day celebration. They settled on a “pirate invasion” to capture the public’s imagination.
