She did not howl. Not yet.

The gray alpha stepped forward. He was missing half his tail now. A fresh gash ran down his flank. He dipped his head—not submissive, but acknowledging. Then he sat back and waited .

Behind her, the gray alpha lay down in the grass and rested his heavy head on her flank. She leaned into him. And for the first time in her life, she was not a biologist studying a pack. june hervas pack

And then she saw them.

It wasn’t a howl that woke her. It was the absence of one. She did not howl

She touched her collarbone. The scar there—three ragged lines, like a claw mark—thrummed with a low, dull heat.

The black female—the beta—stepped forward. She pressed her nose to June’s scarred collarbone. The heat there flared, then cooled. And June felt something unlock in her chest. Not a cage door. A door she’d built herself, brick by brick, since the night she’d woken up in the ranger station. He was missing half his tail now

“You walked in here,” he’d said slowly. “On two legs. But your eyes… your eyes were yellow, Dr. Hervas.”
