The night photos remain a silent, illuminated scream in the dark: proof that somewhere in the jungle, two women were alive and awake at an hour when most people are asleep. What they were trying to show—or who they were trying to reach—has never been answered.

Yet no theory fully explains why, after a week of silence, they suddenly filled a memory card with over 90 identical, confusing images in the middle of the night—and why nothing after that was ever recorded again.

Someone (or multiple people) was with them that night. The photos were taken under duress—perhaps to document evidence of their location, or as a bizarre act by a perpetrator. The “marker sticks” and bag are interpreted as a coded signal left for searchers, implying the women were held against their will. The missing photo 509 might have shown something incriminating. What the Investigation Concluded Panamanian authorities ruled the deaths an accident (likely a fall followed by exposure). Dutch forensic investigators found no proof of foul play. The night photos were deemed the desperate acts of two young women trying to survive.

On April 1, 2014, the two young Dutch women vanished while hiking the Pianista Trail near Boquete. Their remains were found months later, but before their phones died, a cryptic sequence of images was taken on Lisanne’s camera between 1:00 AM and 4:00 AM on April 8—eight days after they went missing.
