This mirrors the ancient practice of sacrifice : giving the monster something bounded so that it does not take everything. The art lies in making the threshold believable—convincing the predator that beyond this line lies not negotiation but annihilation.

Second, the : a bureaucracy, market, or ideology so vast and impersonal that it becomes monstrous. Think of the 2008 financial crisis—bankers negotiated with “too big to fail” entities that had no conscience, only actuarial tables.
