We meet Om Prakash Makhija (Shah Rukh Khan), a junior artist with a heart of gold and stars in his eyes. He’s hopelessly in love with the reigning queen of the screen, Shantipriya (Deepika Padukone in her debut). Om is a "tragedy king" of the extras department, but he dreams of being a hero. When he discovers that Shantipriya is actually being exploited by her sleazy producer husband (Arjun Rampal), Om tries to save her. The result? A brutal, fiery climax where both are killed. Om dies whispering her name.

The film walks a tightrope between parody and earnestness, and it never falls off. Let’s talk about the elephant in the room—or rather, the 31 elephants in the room. The infamous "Filmfare Awards" sequence where Om Kapoor wins Best Actor is cinematic ecstasy.

It is ridiculous. It is over-the-top. And it is glorious . Farah Khan, who previously directed the colorful Main Hoon Na , understood something fundamental: you cannot mock Bollywood unless you love Bollywood.

Seventeen years later, we have bigger VFX budgets, pan-India superstars, and OTT platforms. Yet, when you press play on Om Shanti Om , it still feels like a magic trick. It’s a film that is simultaneously a spoof, a tragedy, a revenge thriller, a love story, and the greatest love letter Bollywood ever wrote to itself.

Reincarnation. Om is reborn as the superstar son of a powerful film family. Through a chance encounter (and a very dramatic case of past-life regression), he remembers everything. Now known as Om Kapoor (OK for short), he uses the film industry’s obsession with showmanship to exact revenge on the man who murdered him 30 years ago.

“It’s all about loving your work... and working with style.”
