STEP TOWARDS SUCCESS

“I’m going to simulate a red giant dying,” she told him, “by letting my own career slowly collapse.” The next morning, her phone rang. It was Markus, the synthwave producer.

“It’s… glowing,” Elena said. “But I need to talk about the budget.”

“I can fake it. But it will look fake. Like a screensaver from 2003.”

“Deal,” she said. She clicked Buy Now on Red Giant’s website. The checkout process was eerily smooth. No human asked if she was sure. No pop-up said: “Warning: This purchase will delay your ability to buy groceries for three weeks.”

She laughed. A bitter, hollow sound. Her cat, Schrödinger (yes, really), looked up from his cardboard box.

She closed the laptop. Opened it again. She scrolled through Reddit, searching for loopholes. Someone mentioned an “educational license” for $499. But she’d graduated four years ago. No .edu email. Another thread suggested “alternative solutions”—cracked versions. She’d used one once, years ago, on a pirated copy of CS6. It crashed constantly. And every render had a faint watermark of guilt.

“We made it,” she said.
