Dr. John Sturgis (Wallace Shawn), Sheldon’s mentor and Meemaw’s boyfriend, gives Sheldon a pineapple as a gift. Sheldon, who lives by strict social rules (usually derived from The Baby Einstein Handbook or Star Trek ), realizes he has no protocol for responding to a non-relative's gift. He becomes obsessed with the "reciprocity equation," eventually leading him to conclude he must give Sturgis a gift of equal or greater value.
